Hannelore Galore

Filming culture

This is the toy boy (Clooney) I have been working with during the past two years. He gave me hard times in the beginning, but soon we became best friends. Now it’s time for a new track, I’m swapping jobs (that greener grass..). But Clooney and I might meet again one day, who knows. Like [...]

Egypt and the Sinai desert

Last September, threegirls travelled to Egypt. Some sweet Egyptian friends guided them around Cairo, which is a disaster of a city. Too many cars, too much hassling, and not a single (green) space to give your bottom a rest. After four days, threegirls had to sweat out Cairoan stress far far away from the smog [...]

Istanbul goulash

Last week, I visited the city which once was the terminus of the infamous Orient-Express. Historically seen, Istanbul is one of the most intriguing cities in the world. When Gini met Darwin

Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer

  • (just reading Raymond Carver's whatwetalkaboutwhenwetalkaboutlove, 'Why don't you dance' is one of the short stories) What a gem! William Onyeabor is a funk musician from Nigeria. He studied cinematography in Russia for many years, returning to Nigeria in the mid-70s to start his own Wilfilms music label and a music and film production studio. He recorded a number of hit songs in Nigeria during the 70s, the biggest of which was “Atomic Bomb” in 1978. His songs are often heavily rhythmic and synthesized, occasionally epic in scope, with lyrics decrying war sung by both Onyeabor himself and female backing vocalists. In recent years a number of his songs have appeared on various compilations, most often his biggest hit "Better Change Your Mind", through labels such as Luaka Bop. His albums have long since gone out of print, prompting high prices from collectors on eBay. William has now been crowned a High Chief in Enugu, where he lives today as a successful businessman working on government contracts and running his own flour mill.. A real mass migration of galaxy nations. Do you see those star families travelling, all packed, ready and raring to go? Scientists think there must be something very tempting out there. This very interesting one for example, deals with 'Relational art', a term invented by art critic Nicholas Bourriaud, ex-director of Palais de Tokyo. Ben Lewis goes on a search for whether relational art could be a new 'ism', the first real 'ism' of the 21st century.. You can find the art safari with Matthew Barney on Ubu Web. • Tyger is a magical short film from 2006 by Brazilian director Guilherme Marcondes. This 'cityjungle' animation is based on the William Blake poem 'The Tyger'. What I like about it, besides the visuals, the rhythm (very much like a poem) and the intentionally visible puppeteers, is that it avoids the pure romantic dystopian vision of society by making the tiger not only dangerous, but also a creator of natural beauty along the way. Humans are animals, after all. # more

  • The North-Korean leader Kim Jong-il is one of the most mysterious leaders in the world. Not much is known about his life, and what is known is often highly disputed. Yet the Guardian found some photo albums of this highly feared fluorescent leader. My favorite is the one where Kim Jong is not inspecting his nuclear warheads, but some idyllic wheatfields together with his doggy crew. O dictatorial leaders can be so funny in their dictatorialness! This reminds me of the really really must-have dvd 'Let's Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin', released last year by the ex-president himself (in the same series: Putin fishing bare chested, Putin killing bears and Putin saving tv-crews from giant Siberian tigers). • In his famous 'Amusing Ourselves to Death', written in pre-internet times (1985), Neil Postman wrote down his fascinating fear that reality might be reflected more by Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, where the public is oppressed by pleasure, than George Orwell's 1984, where the public is oppressed by pain. In the Orwellian vision of the future, totalitarian governments seize individual rights, while in Brave New World, people medicate themselves into bliss and voluntarily sacrifice their rights. Shortly put, Postman thinks that mankind surrenders its rights in exchange for entertainment (television). He says that a particular medium can only sustain a particular level of ideas, and that television (in 1985, up to you to decide if that's still - or even more - the case today) cannot sustain any of the conditions needed for honest intellectual involvement and rational argument, since everything gets diluted on TV. He gives a striking example: the first fifteen U.S. presidents could probably have walked down the street without being recognized by the average citizen, yet all these men would have been quickly known by their written words. The reverse is true today. The names of presidents call up visual images, typically television images, but few, if any, words come to mind. The few that do almost exclusively consist of # more

  • Some psych tips in the spirit of - a whole new mind - Dan Pink and the queen of webproductivity Gina Trapani. The Cult of Done Manifesto 1. There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion. 2. Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done. 3. There is no editing stage. 4. Pretending you know what you're doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you're doing even if you don't and do it. 5. Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it. 6. The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done. 7. Once you're done you can throw it away. 8. Laugh at perfection. It's boring and keeps you from being done. 9. People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right. 10. Failure counts as done. So do mistakes. 11. Destruction is a variant of done. 12. If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done. 13. Done is the engine of more. # more
  • I have never known a woman who gets so little media attention in her own country, while thrilling the rest of the world. Pattie Maes is a Belgian tech expert, already living in the US for years. She is one of the leading researchers at the brilliant MIT Media lab. In Maes' world, the computer is no longer a distinct object, but a source of intelligence that’s embedded in our environment. At her newly founded Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT, Patti Maes and her student Pranav Mistry developed a real 'Sixth Sense'. It is a wearable device which enables you to interact between the real world and the world of data, in a very intuitive way. For example when you want to know the time, just draw a watch on your wrist and you'll see the time appearing. Or in case you forgot your cell phone, just aim the device at your handpalm and you'll be able to form a number on your hand and do that call. The audience obviously went wild while watching her TED talk. # more

Volgende keer beter, dEUS. # more

Bom in eigen boezem, zelf-polarisatie, zoiets. # more
  • Take a look at the work of Julien Vallee, he's a Canadian living in Montreal, and the world flowing out of his fingers is wonderful. This video was made for the project Globologos, an event curated by Canada's Sid Lee Collective. It aims to be an oasis for free-roaming ideas, a place where participants are invited to generate 'durable' creativity beyond consumerism. Artists were invited to create a video piece based on the work of Jack Languirand, a well-known Quebecois philosopher and poet. The little gem above is Julien Vallee's contribution. Source: Computer Arts December 2008 And this is the new origami-type stop motion music video done by director/animator Sean Pecknold at Grandchildren, who has a couple of Fleet Foxes videos under his belt. Mykonos from Grandchildren on Vimeo. Other animated gems (from the site:) In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview. This was in the midst of Lennon's "bed-in" phase, during which John and Yoko were staying in hotel beds in an effort to promote peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries traditional pen sketches by James Braithwaite with digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message. The songs are created by 39 top-drawer bands, and are based on the artist's lyrics, which are Shrigley all over. This track, for example, is just fatter than fat (music by Tussle, lyrics and voice by David Shrigley): Here you find an in depth review by the (slightly top-down) Pitchfork guys. This is a brand new track from yoyow-species Common, in collaboration with Chester French, two boys from Massachusetts, being chased by Pharell, Mr West and Jermaine Dupri to catch them into their labels (they chose Pharrell's Star Trak). Choosing your buddies, rule number one on planet music. And yes, letting yoyow-species do it with hipcat-species seems to be very fruitful. This will become a popular dancefloor killer, if you ask Suzy from the musicpolice. More Chester French here. 'Beneath the veil' is a good song, the other ones are so so. To keep an eye on anyway. • A few days ago, the coolest bard on earth, Nick Cave, handed over the prestigious but much debated Turner prize to Mark Leckey, from now on very cool too (that's still the Turner rule). Although I don't know Leckey's work at all (which appears to be not that abnormal), except for some glimpses via this video, I like him. First impression (very important since very sticky), undoubtedly. 97 percently because he looks like Brad in 'Snatch' and because of his innocent accent, I admit. Time to explore his universe a bit deeper. - Note - What I don't understand is that the critics moan about the fact that the Turner prize "doesn't provoke controversy and criticism anymore". First of all, the times have changed, big time. In this ultra visual culture, where anarchy is often immeditaley hijacked by marketeers, provoking (in the positive sense of the word) isn't about violence, dirty minds or screaming anymore. These days, only modest but sharp and intelligent poetry can charm people, draw their attention and make them think again. And that's exactly what the Turner prize nominees Runa Islam, Mark Leckey, Goshka Macuga and Cathy Wilkes are trying to do. The intention is alive, and I like that a lot more than the 'posh parading with anarchy' philosophy during the Young British artists - era. # more
  • Stop the bullet. Kill the Gun. This is a campaign made by the agency AMV BBDO. Client is the hiphop/r&b broadcast Choice FM. These 60 minutes are a part of the 'Peace on the streets' campaign of Choice FM. The idea is very simple but because of the fantastic production unbelievably powerful. The camera used in the filming captures images at over 10,000 frames per second. It is the first time it’s been used for a British commercial. The music in the ad is the stunning aria 'Casta Diva' from the opera 'Norma', created by the Sicilian composer Vincenzo Bellini. The version in the ad is of poor quality (probably because of copyright issues), but you should listen to a Maria Callas-interpretation. The aria was one of her favorites and Maria Callas is by no doubt the most 'famous' Norma of the postwar period. She performed the role more than 89 times (Source = Wikipedia). Skin crawling. # more
